Ms. Orlando,

Hello, I am a young attorney recently barred (2008). I was wondering how one goes about getting into entertainment law? Unfortunately my law school did not offer any such classes and most of my experience is in insurance defense. I am not begging for a job or anything, I just wonder if I there will be any opportunities in the upcoming Michigan film industry and if you had any advice on how to go about finding them? Just figured you might know based on your impressive resume.

Thank you for your time.

Hello Miss. Orlando,

You want to know something interesting?
You don't even know me and I have made you my mentor.
Sounds stalkerish....lol.

No but seriously Miss Orlando I am hoping to gain your knowledge and experience within this field of entertainment. I remember like 2 years ago I saw you post something about being in radio for years and then earning your law degree. I just emailed you on a whim and you actually responded. Cool and rare in this business.

Fast forward 2009. I graduated from EMU in 2005 B.S degree in Mass Media Communications. Always knew in life I was going to be a radio jock or entertainment attorney. After interning at Hot 102.7 and FM98WJLB I learned the radio business is a hobby maybe a career if you are lucky. Moved back from (love this city) Atlanta, GA in 2007.

Currently I live in downtown Detroit (born & raised) working for Oakland County Juvenile Detention center and working on my Master's in Entertainment Business online through Full Sail University. I want to become an Entertainment Attorney and promote open mics in the city. Motown shine will swing back around. New York, L.A and now ATL grew as music Mecca's because of our history. Wheeeeww......out of breath.

My focus now is to get accepted to U of D Mercy law school Fall 2010. I'm taking the LSAT in December. U of D open house for Fall 2010 class is June 17th. I want to learn from the best. No other woman I have heard of is making noise like you in the city.

You have worked for years at very reputable metro Detroit radio stations, deejayed as a woman at some of the hottest local clubs, first Caucasian program director at WJLB, took the time out to realize hey this radio career (especially with syndication taking over) may fall through, I need a back-up plan and went to law school AND helped Kid Rock & Eminem be signed through your open mic nights! This may sound a little unprofessional, but in the game your are a bad Bish! You up there with Sylvia Rhone, Suzanne De Passe, Katie Couric, Denise Ilitch. Plus Congratulations on starting your own firm. WOW!

I am interested in really learning about this business. You can have a degree, you can have a passion for your field, but you must also have experience. I would like to get your advice on applying to your Alma mater. Entertainment law is not all glamor I have heard, you must know litigation, contracts, negotiations, recognize new trends, network etc. One day soon I want to become an intern, legal assistant, lawyer at your practice. Thank you Miss Orlando for your time. I just thought you should know you have inspired me.

Robin
